SAORI - OUR MISSION

1. To lead everyone to explore his or her hidden creativity through free weaving.

2. To enrich everyone's life by giving a chance to enjoy weaving as a creative art form in his or her daily life.

3. To contribute to the community through making an environment in which everyone with different abilities can enjoy weaving together as an art form and learn from each other as a group.

SAORI for Children

We just show the children how to weave. Childrens are very quick in remembering the steps, and soon become able to weave. Once they become able to weave, we do not teach. We just let them weave as they like. To our surprise, children already have their own power of creativity, and we, adults, learn a lot from them about what "creativity" truly means....

SAORI for Senior Citizens

In the process of aging, we get older phisically, but never in mentally. This is what Misao Jo has insited for a long time. SAORI weaving can be a good rehabilitation method for senior citizens. Once senior citzens find a way to express their creativity in their daily life, they will be filled with joy of living and even their life-style changes dramatically.

SAORI for People with Different Abilities

The weavers mentally handicapped are naturally free from fixed notions, and they can freely express their own creativity in weaving. Their works let us enjoy a lot of texture, energy, freedom and happiness, and they are truly an "art". In Japan, there are more than 2,000 institutions which practice SAORI weaving, and many people with different abilities are enjoying weaving there. These institutions produce goods out of their hand-woven cloths, and sell them in public to support their activities and help the handicapped people become independent.

VSA arts of Japan

VSA arts is an international, nonprofit organization founded in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith to create a society where all people with disabilities learn through, participate in and enjoy the arts.

In 1989, SAORI was ceritified as an affiliate, VSA arts of Japan.
